💪 Machine-Only Workout Over 40: My LA Fitness Hollywood FL Routine
I’m over 40, eight years Air Force, and I still train like it matters, because it does. This is my machine-only workout at the LA Fitness on Sheridan Street in Hollywood: slow reps, controlled breathing, and walk breaks, so I stay in the gym instead of on the couch with an ice pack.
🎯 Staying fit over 40 is the vibe
I host VIP nights, I’m on my feet a lot, and I want to look and feel right doing it. Staying fit over 40 isn’t about chasing a number on a bar anymore. It’s about showing up every week, feeling good, and not getting hurt.
The Air Force taught me routine. You don’t skip, you don’t freelance, and you don’t do something stupid because somebody’s watching. That’s the whole approach to my veteran workout over 40.
🏋️ Skip the free weights, master the machines
I stay away from the free weights and I master the machines. A machine guides the weight along a set path, so I can push hard without the bar drifting, my wrist rolling, or my shoulder doing something it shouldn’t.
Free weights look cool. I get it. But looking cool on the weight floor isn’t worth what it can cost you at this age. Learn every machine on the floor, set the seat right, and own each movement before you add weight.
🫁 Control the breathing, slow the reps
Every rep is slow and controlled, and I keep my breathing steady the whole way. No bouncing, no jerking the weight up, no rushing it back down. That’s how I avoid the small ligament and tendon tears that sneak up on you after 40.
Here’s the math that keeps me honest: in my experience, one injury like that can mean about six months out of the gym, and then another year to rebuild what you lost. One rep you tried to look good on isn’t worth a year and a half. That’s lifting over 40 without injury in one sentence.
🚶 The walk reset: every 20 minutes or so
I train at high intensity. Then, every 20 minutes or so, I take a walk of about 10 minutes to bring my heart rate back down before I go hard again. Laps around the gym, a stroll past the court, whatever. Walk, breathe, reset.
That’s my version of walking breaks to lower heart rate. It keeps me from redlining, and it keeps the session going longer without me feeling wrecked the next day.
🏀 The court vs the weight floor: Gen Z vs millennial gym
Walk past the basketball court and you’ll see it. The young guys go high energy, high impact, full speed every possession. And from what I’ve seen, plenty of them end up icing an injury within a couple of weeks.
For them, though, that’s part of it. Pickup games, the bumps and bruises, talking trash between runs: that’s the social scene and how they meet people. That’s the generational gap in a nutshell. They come to play. I come to stay.
No shade, I was them once. But pickup basketball over 40 isn’t worth it for me. My social scene is the VIP nights. The gym is where I keep the body that gets me there.
✅ Over-40 starter checklist
- Check with your doctor before you start a new routine.
- Learn the machines first. Set the seat and pads right every time.
- Slow, controlled reps. Steady breathing. No bouncing, no jerking.
- Leave your ego at the door. Add weight only when the form stays clean.
- Walk it down: every 20 minutes or so, take an easy walk to let your heart rate come back down.
- Skip the high-impact pickup games if you can’t afford six months out.
- Show up every week. Consistency beats one big day.

❓ FAQ
Is a machine-only workout over 40 enough?
For me, yes. Machines guide the path of the weight, so I can train hard with slow, controlled reps and less chance of a small ligament or tendon tear. Plenty of coaches like to add some free-weight work over time, so talk to a trainer about what fits your body.
Why walk every 20 minutes or so during a workout?
I train at high intensity, so about every 20 minutes or so I take a walk of around 10 minutes to bring my heart rate back down before I go hard again. That is my personal routine, not a medical rule. Check with your doctor before starting a new routine.
Is pickup basketball worth the injury risk over 40?
That is your call. From what I have seen on the court, the young guys go full speed and plenty of them end up icing something within a couple of weeks. At 40 I would rather stay on the machines and stay in the gym.
